Their is nothing better than a good example when you explain something visual. Typography is a a nice trend at the moment in web design. As always web designers try to pick ideas from the print industry to display content the best way possible. And of course a well thought typography will help a page look right.
There is no magic recipe for beautiful text but there are things you shouldn’t do. I came across this Display Energy Certificates site while searching valid materials for the gallery. What comes in mind first is “Is this really Comic Sans Ms?!”. Yeah, the good old Comic Sans MS, created by for Microsoft. This font is by far the one I hate the most. Used and re-used in every cheap homemade fliers, un-professional powerpoint and your daughter birthday invitation cards.
First advice when you choose your typeface: pick a good one, that’s web safe and that looks professional enough. Don’t hesitate to mix and match serif and sans serif too. I usually find that Serif titles and sans serif text work well together.
To finish with the titles, but this is more a usability issue, I feel their choice of blue is too close to the default blue used for links. Plus in this case it doesn’t match with the logo.
Next is the letter spacing. Clearly wrong here. Far to large between the letters, the text is very hard to read. Letter spacing is a nice detail but again it usually works best on titles or very short text (2 – 5 words).
I reall y like their logo though and with some little tweaks the site could be good.
