Weekly winner is back after a few busy weeks where I couldn’t find the time to write. This week has seen the highest submission rate since the lunch of the gallery with 15 websites published and about the double in submissions. Unfortunately their are still a lot of nice website I would like to include but they just don’t validate. And when your are called Yoursiteisvalid it makes a big difference.
Anyway, this week I’ve selected smashLAB’s website http://www.smashlab.com/.

The design
It’s kind of a clean/corporate design. smashLAB being a interactive agency you expect a professional look and I think the site does just that. While the simple design and the greys gives it the corporate feeling, the orange and the hi-res pics brings more details. It’s sharp and it works.
I also really like the fac that the site is aligned left instead of the common page centre. The navigation is clearly identified, all the links have the same color but I regret that the main nav doesn’t use the css spites techniques to preload the hover version. With the connection here I have to wait about 2 sec to get the orange version of each button.
The code
From the head and all the script tags I can tell they use extensively javascript. About 100kb split between yui, jquery, swfobject and some other stuff. But then when you scroll a bit you see more javascript. I am sure there are a few files that could be grouped in one file. The less http request you make the better it is.
Down to the body now. God it’s div heavy here. Some are certainly not needed. Wrapping a list with a div to make the menu for example. Why not get rid of the div and give an id to the ul? But maybe they use a CMS that doesn’t give this kind of liberty.
Other than that it seems perfectly fine. Again on the top navigation I would have left the text in each link, indented it -999em and put the images as background. Because I suspect that with a text browser you won’t be able to navigate anywhere.
