If you don’t know what Quake Live is yet you should have a look at the site first: http://quakelive.com. Quake 3 was a very popular first person shoot game a few years ago. But because every video game gets replaced by a better concurrent at some point it kind of disappeared after a while.
But at some point last year Id Software released a new version of Quake 3 with one major update. It now plays from your browser! Don’t get over excited thought, you still need to install a plugin and it is only compatible with Firefox and IE at the moment.
Apart from being attracted by the game, which I personally play extensively during my breaks, I am very impressed by the site itself. If you want a demo of what Ajax does when used for everything then this is the perfect example.
The source code isn’t that bad but that’s mainly because all you see is the loading page. Everything is pulled using ajax calls. They must also have attached an over event to pretty much every element on the page. It’s poping up all over the place with stats, friends status and game progress. Impressive!
I tell you, I would not want to work in their dev team, because it must be a scary web in there…
