The design process of a website could be resumed as follow:
- Hand draft
- Software mockup
You need of course all the preliminary work on the brand, sector, etc… That’s not the subject here. So when you reach the software mockup state you will open you favorite tool and start reproducing what you’ve got on you sketchbook.
At this point you should strat taking in consideration the size you have to actualy display the information. If you don’t think about that here you may end up with a design that doesn’t fit a standard browser window. And that’s bad.
So before laying down you layers and pretty boxes think. The space a browser window allow to display content is called the viewport. And because the browser war is not over yet, the viewport is never the same size. Would have been to easy.
But of course the viewport depends of the resolution of your screen. I don’t work Mac but I guess the full window on Mac is not the same size, at equal resolution, as the window on windows. Damn.
I can’t say I’ve got a perfect solution but when I design I use a kind of guide, like guides in printing, that define the size I’ve got in different browser at different resolutions. Starting from this same psd every time, you can build up you site and check that it fit at anytime.
So here is the file, for me to download if I am on a different machine and for you if you think it can help. If you see any improvement possible don’t hesitate to post in the comments. I was thinking to add a pixel grid. It might come later if I find time.
