Meagan Fisher, winner of the week

Last week was very busy and I missed the winner site of the week but I am back on track this week. And the winner is…….(long silence) Meagan Fisher blog/portfolio website (applause and crazy scream).

I’ve picked this website for the design. I am a big fan of the grungy trend. So when I saw paper texture, map background, pencil and…. an owl(!?) that was it.

But grungy is easy. Stick a texture in the background and you’re half way through. Take Yoursiteisvalid for example. The guy who did it was in a rush, he took a concrete texture, made it dark and done, Grungy! So yes grungy is easy but good grungy is not.

I think the grungy style works for personal website that have a kind of history in their design. When I look at Meagan blog I think: Where does this map come from? why a ruler? Hum, drinking ginger ale then? And that’s what a good design should do. Like treasure hunting, looking for clues and secret hints on the owner.

I think the design on this blog is brilliant.

Now I’ve said all those nice things, I can feel better about pointing some downside. First I think the menu doesn’t stand out enough. I’ve only noticed it the second time I went on the site. Black text on dark background makes the links hard to read as well. Same for the text at the bottom.

Coding wise nothing to say. Simple xhtml powered by our friend wordpress. Although the meta “generator” as a content= “wordpress 2.6-bleeding”. If I am not mistaken it meens this version of wp was taken from the bleeding edge. I don’t see any fancy javascript and the code is valid of course, without any warnings.

Very nice portfolio as well Meagan, some good stuff in there. Keep up the good work. About the crazy neck thing, just keep practicing ;)
