How to make a texture that repeats nicely
In this tutorial I use photoshop but the method can be applied to any decent graphic software. The difficulty with texture when you make then from a picture is the light. Even studio shots don’t have a perfect uniform light, specially over a large surface.
The idea here is to make a picture that ends how it begins. If it’s not clear yet wait to see the example.
So take a big photograph, the concrete one from last post for example. On this you want to cut just a little piece. Try to get a slice that’s not to specific. The less holes and scratches the better. I know it gives more details but trust me on this one.
I did mine in a rush and I see now that I could have picked a better area on the wall. Now you got you texture you can see that repeated it wont work. We need to tweak it first. Before going further ensure that your image is a layer and not a background layer. If not double click on the background layer and click ok. Now go to image_canavas size or press ctrl+maj+C.
Here you want to leave the space to duplicate your layer vertical and horizontally so click the relative box, select percent in the unit and write 100 in width and 100 in height. (Increasing by 100% double the size).
You should get something like this:
Now duplicate the layer ctrl+J and then without deselection the new layer press ctrl+T. Now right click on the layer and choose flip horizontal. Then drag the layer to the right.
If you repeat the this operation and replace the flip horizontal by a flip vertical for the bottom left part and both flip for the bottom right part you should end up with something similar to this:
Now select the clone stamp tool and work the picture to get rid of the things you don’t want. And I suggest you merge the four layers before doing that.
Now this one should repeat nicely in the background. If you don’t believe me look in the background of this page.
