How to make a texture that repeats nicely

In this tutorial I use photoshop but the method can be applied to any decent graphic software. The difficulty with texture when you make then from a picture is the light. Even studio shots don’t have a perfect uniform light, specially over a large surface.

Photoshop smart objects, clever!

Seems I am discovering loads with photoshop at the moment. Have you heard about smart object? Well I hadn’t since the last few days. Smart objects are like a psd inside a psd. It is treated like a single layer but can be composed with as many layers as you want.

I discovered it when I wanted to apply a border around a group of layers. Well doesn’t quite work, at least in CS2. There is not blending options for groups and if you want to keep the shapes and text as vector I don’t know any other way than smart object. Read the rest of this entry »

Create and use your own patterns in Photoshop

In Photoshop you can apply patterns on layers using the paint bucket tool(G) or by going in the blending options of you layer in the Pattern Overlay tab.

You might be a very fast drawer but when you have to fill the background with repetitive small stuff pattern is you best friend. Before getting started don’t forget that a pattern is repeated as many time as possible to fill the space. Don’t be afraid of the pen tool.

I know some people that use Photoshop very often but still don’t want to think about using the pen tool for anything. Why? Because it does scary things, draw lines and curves I don’t want, etc…

To bad because the pen tool is in my opinion one of the most powerful tool in photoshop. I really discovered it when I learned how to delete the history vectors on curves. Read the rest of this entry »
